A New Year, A New You: Ashley Transitions in 2010

What influenced your decision to go natural?

It took me a while to actually go through with it.  I had toyed with the idea for a while. I was tired of, my hair being so simple. I wanted to be able to express myself through my hair.  I have a big, fun personality and my hair should be represent that.  After going to a natural hair show with some friends, I realized I had to do it.  No matter what people there had done to their hair, everyone’s was different! (and I loved that!). After deciding to do it I realized how much healthier it is and I am more aware of the qualities of this stuff God gave me.

As it has started to grow I really love the way it feels.  It is so soft and textured and feels so much better than my relaxed hair. I love it!  I would always say, “let me just grow it out and see what happens.” Now that I have felt the softness, it drives me to continue.

Have you set a date for your Big Chop?
If so, what is that date?
I said I was going to transition for a year and then BC, so that would make January the magic month.

What hairstyles are you wearing during your transition?

In the beginning I would cornrow my hair or flat twist it and take it a loose.  I have tried Curly Nikki’s twist and curl, I have done rods and bantu knots as well.  In July I had to be in a wedding so I got a sew in.  I kept the sew in for about 3 months (best idea ever!!).  Since I took the sew in out I had to get used to the growth and I wasn’t ready to BC, so I got a Lace front wig, and wore that for about a month.  I am now rocking my favorite style, my bantu knots.

Are you having any current challenges transitioning? If so, what are they?

My only problem is finding products that work best with my hair.  There are so many options out there.  Learning which products work best, and are the most healthy was probably the hardest part.

This kind of answers the next question…

(What do you feel will be the greatest adjustment once you go natural?)
I also don’t like that my styles don’t always last as long as I want them too.  But I guess that can be a good thing, it forces me to wash it and try something else.

I like to try different things.  It helped me learn to have a relationship with my hair.  That has made my transition very easy.  I am not afraid to try something…and if I don’t like it I’ll slap the lace front bob on it and go on as usual. You can’t be afraid.  You’ve got to be all in!

When those roots start coming in and you got relaxed ends, it can be frustrating.  It’s harder to comb through, some styles that once looked good, don’t look good anymore, and you may find yourself wanting to give up!  It is then that you just have to adjust as you will when its fully natural.  I think we all used relaxers as a convenient cop out.  Let’s get back to the way things should be and appreciate it.  Don’t give up!

Who are 3-5 of your favorite Natural Hair YouTubers and/or bloggers? Curly Nikki, Afroniquely You, Afrobella, Felicia Leatherwood- Loving Your Hair With Natural Care (Youtube and facebook), Natural Hair Rules, and Trendy Socialite (of course!)

There is so much good stuff out there, I don’t limit myself to these, but I these are the ones I most frequent.

Who are a few of your favorite YouTubers or bloggers (any topic)?
My friend Krystle has a fashion blog Mirrorcheck.com (check it out!!)

Who are some of your natural hair inspirations (YouTubers, celebs, ordinary people, etc.)?
My friends are my inspirations.  We have hair parties and try different things on each other’s hair.  I enjoy making the journey with them and it’s nice to have a support system. I know my hair may never look like any of theirs or any celebrity’s but that’s what I feel is the beauty of it… we can all be unique!

Moisturize Your Hair with E.A.S.E.: 4 Easy Steps

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Whether you are relaxed or natural, we all have challenges keeping our hair properly moisutrized. This challenge is magnified during the colder months when there is little to no moisture in the air to aid in moisture retention. Yet it is ever more imperative to keep proper moisture balance in the colder, drier months.

It would seem easy to moisturize our hair, right? After all, most of us remember sitting between our mother's, auntie's or grammy's legs getting our hair "greased" on Saturday evening? :)

When we began our HHJ (healthy haircare journey), we were told this was NOT good for our hair. However, we were told to still moisturize our hair. And ever since, the moisture balance has been a cat and mouse game.

Hopefully the following 4 easy steps will help add some "method" to the madness of keeping hair properly moisturized. Believe me, you can do it with E.A.S.E.!
Edges

The first step in moisturizing hair properly is to apply your moisturizer to your hair's edges. You do this by applying some moisture mix or oil to your fingertips and apply to your edges all the way around your hairline. Do not rub in circular motions, but from your forehead going back to your crown area. This will also help smooth your edges.

All Over
Next take a quarter-sized amount (at least) and apply it all over your hair. This will help to make hair more pliable for the next step. If your hair is longer and thicker or finer, you may have to adjust the amount based on what your hair is able to withstand.

Sections

Part hair in 4 sections: ear to ear and front to back. Take at least a  quarter-sized amount of your moisturizer and apply it to each section. You will have to determine exactly how much moisturizer your hair needs in order to maintain proper moisture balance without being greasy or heavy.

Ends

Sealing the moisture in the ends is extremely important to maintaining proper moisture balance. The ends are the oldest part of your hair strand. It's drier than the rest of the strand. Excessive dry ends can lead to split ends and breakage. We often do not pay enough attention to our ends. But in order to really obtain the full benefits of properly moisturizing your hair, it is imperative to apply some sealant oil to the ends of your hair. It is easy to do this since your hair is already in sections from the previous step. Among the most popular oils to seal your ends with are EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), coconut oil and castor oil.

Now that you know how to moisturize your hair with E.A.S.E., your hair will thank you by retaining length even during these cold, dry months ahead.

Blogger Feature: Prissy and Nicole from Rush Our Fashion

While I was stalking reading blogs, I somehow stumbled across a blog called Rush Our Fashion. I loved the feminine, stylish and even sexy (in a wholesome way) quality of the outfits I saw. I reached out to the relatively new bloggers and they graciously shared a bit of their story with my Trendy Socialite fam.

Name: Prissy & Nicole
Email: Rushourfashion@gmail.com
YouTube: N/A, but coming soon
What is the name of your blog?  Rush Our Fashion

What is the purpose of your blog?
Currently, we’ve been doing a lot of outfit posts, but soon we will have posts that address health issues & relationships. Our purpose is to show women how they can look fabulous inside and out.

How did you get started blogging?
We have been stalking blogs for a while now.  We talked about starting one of our own for months, but never did it. One day we just set a deadline to start & we’ve been blogging ever since.

What are your favorite topics to blog about?
Prissy: Fashion would definitely be my favorite.  I love anything that has to do with fashion, makeup, shoes, just anything “girly”.
Nicole: Right now, the central focus has been on fashion; however, as there are 2 of us, we will be expanding the repertoire to include health issues, relationship issues, self esteem discussions and just anything as it relates to everyday life. The blog is a fashion blog first, but I’d like to see if transition into a fashion/lifestyle blog.

What has been your favorite blog post to date?
Nicole: I’ll allow Prissy to answer that as she has been blogging a lot more than I have lately. (snickers) But seriously, the first blog post will probably always be my fav as it signified that Prissy and I had finally “did it”. We were finally marking through that common entry on our each of bucket lists that said “Start a blog”.
Prissy:  I have 2 favs. Our initial post “New Kids on the Blogspot” was my first favorite. It described us perfectly. My 2nd fav is “Blazered”. I really liked the outfit & how it made me feel the night I wore it.

Do you have any upcoming features or things blog changes in the New Year?
Yes, there are a few exciting changes and features that we will be implementing after the first of the year.  A blog makeover is definitely in the works. We also have a few other things up our sleeves. Without giving all of the surprises away, one of the things we will be doing very soon is a giveaway, so stay tuned for that.

Do you vlog (via YouTube for example) as well as blog? If so, what are the differences? If not, why did you decide to only blog?
We’ve discussed vlogging.  We are looking to add a new feature to Rush Our Fashion called Talk Tuesday! Eventually, we may start doing other types of videos as well.

Who are 3-5 of your favorite bloggers (please include links)?

Prissy:  In no particular order….
Nicole:
What is one thing you love about blogging?
Nicole: It allows me the opportunity to be whoever I want to be and say whatever I feel. It also affords me the opportunity to flex my writing chops!
Prissy: Blogging allows us to have freedom of speech.  I also love all of the lovely comments we receive.

Look to Recreate

If you haven't figured it out by now, I use these blog posts as a way to catalog looks I want to recreate LOL I go back and look at these posts to create looks and shopping lists. So yes, I post these for selfish motives :)

I have two Chinese inspired jackets (I don't know what they are called) that I haven't worn in years because I didn't have any new and creative way to wear them.

But thanks to Tamia at the blog Style Sample I now do!

This is why I HATE getting rid of my clothes...I may find a new purpose and look to create with them and will end up kicking myself later on. I don't even remember where I purchased these jackets, but I have always adored them.
